VARICOCELE EMBOLISATION
What is the medical procedure called varicocoele embolization?
Varicoceles are enlarged and twisted veins that commonly occur in the scrotum, the pouch of skin that holds the testicles. This medical condition can affect the blood flow to the testicles and potentially cause fertility issues. To address this concern, the interventional radiologist often performs a procedure known as varicocoele embolization.
A varicocoele embolization is a minimally invasive surgical procedure aimed at treating varicoceles by redirecting blood flow away from the affected veins. This is typically achieved through the use of tiny incisions and specialized instruments guided by imaging technology, ensuring precision and minimal trauma.
WHY DO YOU CARRY OUT A VARICOCELECTOMY?
Varicoceles are a relatively common condition, occurring in about 10-15% of men. While they can be asymptomatic, they are often associated with pain, discomfort, and potential fertility issues. The interventional radiologist, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of such vascular conditions. Varicocoele embolization is recommended when varicocoeles contribute to male infertility or cause significant discomfort.
The procedure is particularly crucial for individuals experiencing fertility problems linked to varicoceles. By addressing the abnormal blood flow and reducing pressure on the testicular veins, varicocoele embolization aims to improve sperm production and quality, potentially enhancing fertility outcomes.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A VARICOCOELE EMBOLIZATION?
The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and involves the following key steps:
- Anaesthesia: The patient is given local or general anaesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case and the patient's preference.
- Incisions: Dr Creamer makes small incisions, typically in the groin or lower abdomen, to access the affected veins.
- Catheterization: A catheter is often inserted into the veins to help guide the procedure with contrast dye and imaging techniques, ensuring accurate identification of the varicocoeles.
- Treatment: Using specialized instruments, the interventional radiologist redirects blood flow by ligating or embolizing the dilated veins. This helps to alleviate pressure and improve blood circulation in the testicles.
- Closure: The incisions are meticulously closed with compression, and the patient is monitored in a recovery area.
